B. Cobbey Crisler Biography

 

 

 

 

 

 

"Through his lectures, book, tours of Palestine, Turkey, Egpyt and Jordan he made the early Roman sites come alive for the people he encountered"

 

 

While self-taught in ancient Hebrew and Greek, he  won the respect of scholars in the academic world. It was the combination of his disciplined scholarship, outstanding communication skills  that drew people to his lectures around the world."  

B. Cobbey graduated from Harvard University in 1954 with a degree in international government. He served as a lieutenant in the Air Force before taking a job in the advertising department of Mutual of New York.

 He and his wife, Janet, took students to Caesarea Maritima in Israel to participate in archeological excavations with Professor Robert Bull, archeologist at Drew University.

 

 

 

 

 

Along with Cobbey, Janet Crisler developed her own expertise in Bible studies. She co-authored the book, Loaves and Fishes. In 1980 she was named an associate trustee on the board of the American Schools of Oriental Research based in Jerusalem.

Crisler, in 1976 published his accoustical discovery in Palesine in the December 1976 volume of the Biblical Archaeologist under the title, "The Acoustics and Crowd Capacity of Natural Theaters in Palestine."

Later, he and Professor Robert Bull co-authored two books published by Prentice Hall: Come See the Place: The Holy Land Jesus Knew and Fishers of Men: The Way of the Apostles.

Crisler  was a member of the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR), Archeological Institute of America (AIA), Society of  Literature (SBL) and is listed in the Who's Who in Studies and Archaeology. At the time of his passing in 1988, his list of lectures numbered twenty-seven.

In recognition of  B. Cobbey Crisler's dedication to his alma mater, Harvard University, the B. Cobbey and Janet V. Crisler Scholarship in New Testament Studies was established at the Harvard Divinity School in 1989.
